I think it is just more of a way to claim a little bit of high ground in the future. Plus completely avoiding this question during the interview would have also looked very bad and only created even more speculation.
Now they will just say:
"Look, we couldn't discuss it publicly because of blah blah contract blah blah, but at least we did not lie about the reason"
